Touch was probably the first healing therapy ever known to mankind. If we fall or knock ourselves we automatically "rub it better". Massage has been an integral part of life in many cultures - ancient and modern - and we continue to explore and discover the healing effects of touch. AromatherapyAlongside massage, using aromatic substances to uplift the spirit or cure disease has been practised for centuries. Many ancient historical documents describe the art of making ointments, medicated oils and preparations for religious ceremonies. Each oil has its own unique properties which can be used to release stress, stimulate body processes such as elimination or circulation, ease painful muscles and generally give a feeling of well-being. Champissage - Indian head massageMassage is referred to in Indian Ayurvedic texts dating back nearly 4,000 years, and it stills plays an important part in Indian daily life. Massage was practised within families and also by the visiting barbers who tended the hair of everyone, from the King down. Champi is the Hindi word for head massage and was the origin of the word 'shampoo'. In Eastern cultures it is normal to receive a head massage when visiting the barber for a wet shave or hair cut. Champissage in its present form includes the neck and shoulders to provide a totally relaxing experience. Holistic MassageHolistic massage is usually given as a thorough top to toe treatment. Blissfully relaxing if you just want some pampering, but also very beneficial for all types of ailments. It works on the soft body tissue to eliminate toxins that build up as a result of over exertion - both physical and mental, so it is excellent for relieving tired and aching muscles, but it can also help control stress levels and all the ailments that arise from too much stress (i.e. headaches, back pain, I.B.S. & digestive problems, etc.). Massage also stimulates the lymph system - which is the body's own healing mechanism, and the circulatory system in general - which can help reduce high blood pressure and help those with poor blood circulation. Fees: Treatment - 1 hour. £45
